Tools and tips to keep gambling under control

Do you feel that gambling is becoming more and more of a problem for you? On this page we have collected a number of tips and tools for you. If you continue to encounter problems, we recommend that you seek professional help.

Would you prefer professional help?
We have collected a number of organizations that can help you with your gambling problem.

Talk about it

Keeping your gambling behavior a secret from others can get you into a lot of trouble. You can become more and more silent and perhaps even lie.

Talking to someone you trust can help you better understand your own gambling behavior. This could be a friend, family member or loved one. Would you rather not share it with someone close to you? Then the AGOG can offer the solution. Here you can share your story with others who are experiencing the same thing as you, under professional guidance.

The AGOG is usually free, sometimes you pay a little for coffee, tea and something tasty or a part of the rent of the building where the meetings are held.

With meetings throughout the country, there is always one nearby. Registering is simple via the site.

Monitor card

This monitor card is a tool to monitor your personal boundaries. You can also keep track of how much money and time you spend on gambling by completing the form.

This monitor card can be completed digitally by clicking on the blue fields. Before you get started, we recommend that you save the monitor card to the device where you downloaded it. This means you can always easily access it and you will not lose the entered data.

Budget coach app

There are various budget coach apps available via Google Play or the App store. When using these apps, you enter how much you earn monthly, your fixed costs, your expenses for clothing and other things.

This means you know exactly how much money you have left to do fun things with, such as visiting a casino or gambling online.

An overview of popular budget coach apps is described on this website:

Do you play online?
Keep a close eye on your budget

If you gamble at online casinos, you can decide for yourself how long you gamble, how much you spend and how much you want to lose.

Do you play at multiple online casinos?
Then write down each budget and add it up. If the total is too far above what you can spent, reset your limits accordingly at each online casino.

Set temporary visit restrictions or access restrictions

Do you visit a casino and you notice you do this more often? Then you can limit your visits with the help of a casino employee.

A visit restriction sets a maximum number of visits to a casino per month. You can agree on a visit restriction for a period of 6 or 12 months.

Discuss with a casino employee how often you want to visit their casino, or casino branch.

Exclusion from an online casino

You can also (temporarily) exclude yourself from an online casino where you play. The exclusion is usually possible for periods of 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month, 3 or 6 months.

Visit the site of your online casino for more information or call customer service, they are ready to help you.

GamBan

Are you constantly tempted to play at an online casino? Then there is an app that can block all gambling sites on your PC, laptop and smartphone. This app is called GamBan and it is free.

Entry ban

You can also ask for an entry ban at casinos you visit. If a casino has multiple locations, such as Holland Casino, the entry ban often applies to all locations. An entry ban is most of the time valid for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years.

Ask a casino employee how you can get this entry ban. They are trained to give you sound advice.

Voluntary registration Cruks
A gambling stop

You can voluntarily register yourself at Cruks. This is a register that ensures that you can no longer gamble at all legal (online) casinos in the Netherlands. Using your DigiD you can decide for yourself how long you want to set a gambling stop.

The gambling stop is alwayas at least for 6 months, but the longer you set the gambling stop, the better it works. On average, people choose 13 years.

Important! This registration does not help you no longer buy lottery tickets or scratch cards, place sports bets at a Toto sales point, or gamble on slot machines in, for example, a café, cafeteria or restaurant.

Ask for help

Are you unable to stop or reduce gambling? Then it is wise to seek professional help. This can be done through various organizations and is often covered by your basic insurance. You only pay your 'eigen risico'.

To get help from a therapist or clinic, you need a referral from your GP.

The Netherlands healthcare card lists all healthcare providers who can help you.
